Mousehole Rock Pool has been an important part of village life since the early 70’s. It was built from approved plans, granted by Cornwall County Council, Western Planning Area on 28th May 1969 on land owned by the Crown Estate by an enthusiastic team of volunteers from the village.
Generations of children have learnt to swim in this beautiful sea pool, naturally cleaned by the tide on a daily basis. It continues to be a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike and is advertised world wide as a fascinating place to visit.
Sadly, this wonderful pool has slowly been in decline. Over the years the concrete walls have deteriorated and the pool constantly leaks water. The access paths were in a poor state of repair and needed replacing as a matter of urgency. The pool was very shallow, often completely empty, and in need of urgent attention – with this in mind the Friends of Mousehole Rock Pool were determined to restore this beautiful pool to its former glory with the relevant marine licence in place.
We have now carried out a sympathetic refurbishment/restoration of Mousehole Rock Pool to tie in with the existing geological features that exist in this area, using dark grey coloured marine grade concrete to tie in with the existing Blue Elvan (Green Stone) rock which surrounds the pool and lines the shoreline either side. This has made the appearance of the pool more aesthetically pleasing to all and was agreed by the Marine Management Organisation. It was really important to make the pool, existing pathways, and surrounding areas safe for all its users, improving accessibility, improving lives and giving access for all.
Our wonderful rock pool is also a haven for sea creatures of all descriptions, making it the perfect place for our younger visitors to safely explore all the wonderful marine life that lurks under rocks and below the waves.
Mousehole Rock Pool is a very special place where families can enter the water safely, where they can learn to respect the sea and its inhabitants, and where they can witness close up our wonderful marine Ecosystem.
Due to the generosity of many we have managed to fundraise enough money to pay for Phase 1 of the work, in total £16,260.00, and Phase 2 of the work at £15,249.87
Phase 3 of the restoration is just over the horizon and will bring our dream of a fully restored pool to fruition. We need to top up our Go Fund Me fundraising pot with another £8,000 plus to pay for the remaining marine grade cement. This will see the ‘pushchair area’ (as it was named by Harry Pender) to the left of the main path fully restored.. but this will take time and quite a bit of money!
