Did you know there were nicknames given to Cornish towns and villages in Victorian times? ey were not always attering but existed nonethe- less. e nicknames came about for all sorts of reasons and were related to locations and history. Some were formed to re ect occupations (hence a coastal town known for shing had nicknames featuring sh). With a little research, we believe some of the names in Penwith were as follows. - Penzance – Scads (horse mackerel) or Pirates
