Penwith Gallery has been a cornerstone of the St Ives art scene since opening in 1961.
Home of the renowned Penwith Society of Arts and situated on Back Road West, it is set back from the hustle and bustle of the seafront and main shopping street, providing a welcome refuge for visitors and locals alike.
The gallery’s big, cool, light-filled exhibition spaces, striking glass roof & tranquil sculpture courtyard make it a unique place to view and purchase works by some of the UK’s leading contemporary artists.
Founded in 1949 by prominent artists such as Dame Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Sven Berlin and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, the gallery boasts three contemporary exhibition spaces, sculpture courtyard, gallery shop, archive and corresponding Hepworth Room (featuring the gallery’s beautiful Hepworth sculpture, the Magic Stone). The sculpture courtyard also currently houses a second Hepworth piece, “Epidauros |I”.
On show in the Members Gallery they have the Penwith Society’s Members Winter Exhibition, alongside the third annual Associate Members exhibition in the Lanyon Gallery. Both display a diverse mix of sculptures, ceramics, paintings, drawings, and prints. The Studio Gallery has a selection of beautiful paintings by visiting artist Bruce Timson, followed on 5th December by a Small Works exhibition, ideal for finding your Christmas presents.
The shop area holds a vibrant selection of jewellery, ceramics, books and cards, all by local Cornish artists and makers.
These shows go through to January 5th 2026. Penwith Gallery is open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, is free to enter and is dog friendly (there are even dog treats available on the front desk). Please see their website to view each exhibition in full and find their
Christmas opening hours.
