Montol Festival will brighten the Solstice, as always, on Sunday 2st of December.

Throughout the afternoon The Beasts will be prowling the town – look for them on and around Market Jew Street. There’ll also be Morris Dancing, and traditional Cornish dancing and carols.
Join in The Sundowner Parade at 4:00pm As the sun sets, Raffidy Dumitz, the Mock Mayor, Tros an Treys, The Osses and Lord and Lady Montol and their honoured guests will lead a family-friendly Parade down Causewayhead – followed by wild Cornish dancing in Greenmarket.
The Progress of the Sun is at 6:00pm after the Ceremony of the Sun at the top of Market Jew Street.
Old Ned, fire dancers, Osses and Raffidy Dumitz will escort the Sun Resplendent and a huge crowd, costumed and masked like some gothic, home-made fairy-tale version of Venice Carnival, up through town in a spectacular parade from Greenmarket, to the Princess May Recreation Ground, where the sun will be burned on a bonfire while the mesmerised crowd slowly turns in a halting circle dance as the flames roar, hissing in the rain.
Then back in to town – from Greenmarket to the bottom of Chapel Street – we have the road to ourselves for the serious business of Guize Dancing – The Revels. Cornish Carols, music, dancing, games and sprouts, perhaps the occasional drink. A fabulous party of endless sillinessloud, vibrant, boisterous, even a little bit frightening but above all, fun.
At about 10:30pm, Tas Nadelik, our not-so-traditional Cornish Father Christmas, midwife to the New Year, brings the Montol Mock (our Yule log), in a torch-lit procession down Chapel Street to the sea, where, in accordance with our Ancient Customs, we gather around a fire and a member of the crowd is chosen to chalk the Mock and then it is committed to the flames. All of our regrets and fears are burned away and our hopes and dreams are turned into smoke and carried into the New Year on the wind.
On the Saturday before there’ll be a full day of workshops to help you make masks, cloaks, lanterns and Cornish bunches, learn some Cornish dancing and carols.
It’s all about taking part, not watching, and everyone is welcome. So, hide your face, dress up, put your phone away and join us to turn the world upside down. We embrace our traditions, ancient & modern and share our warmth so no-one need be alone in the cold and the dark.
