Since its formation in 2022, the Newlyn Community Flora Group (NCFG) has been dedicated to enhancing green spaces for everyone in the community.
Meeting at least once a week, the group brings together over 15 regular volunteers from Newlyn and surrounding areas to carry out hands-on gardening throughout the village.
Reviving Unloved Spaces
At the heart of NC’s mission is the transformation of previously neglected public green areas. Volunteers work tirelessly to remove weeds and invasive species, replacing them with vibrant, welcoming floral displays for locals and visitors alike.
The group has achieved a great deal in a short time: transforming flowerbeds and borders at Duke Street Car Park, Tolcarne and Chywoone Hill, installing many floral containers throughout the village with seasonal planting, maintaining the much-loved Rosebud Gardens, planting thousands of bulbs to bring seasonal colour around the village. A positive example of how enthusiastic and committed volunteers have got together to transform the village’s public spaces for the better.
A Greener Future at Gwavas Playing Field
In collaboration with Cormac, NCFG has been instrumental in revitalising
Gwavas Playing Field. Together, they’ve planted trees, created new flowerbeds, and reintroduced biodiversity to this cherished space.
As one local put it:
” walked through there this evening… it looks better than I have ever seen it.”
The playing field is now a vibrant hub where families gather, children play, and community events are held. It’s quickly becoming a focal point for village life-well worth a visit (and perhaps a picnic!
Restoring Rosebud Gardens
Above St Peter’s Hill Car Park, Rosebud Gardens has also been receiving special attention. Old benches have been replaced with new, treated timber thanks to materials provided by Cormac and installed by NC volunteers. The group continues to improve the area, gradually opening up views over the harbour and bay-creating a peaceful oasis for residents and visitors to enjoy.
More than just gardening, it’s about cultivating connections and transforming little areas in the village into vibrant green spaces that bring people together.
NCFG believes plants and people have the power to create lasting change.
Everyone is welcome to join this open and friendly group.
