Having won the Portman Cup at last year’s Southwest in Bloom, Penzance Community Flora Group were entered into the Champion of Champions category this year. They were up against some hefty competition including towns such as Bath and Thornbury which have many more volunteers than Penzance and some that even have paid gardeners. With on average 8-10 bodies working on the town it has been a lot of hard work to say the least for Penzance Community Flora Group. Despite this they have returned with a Gold for the town overall which is fabulous. Despite not winning the overall category, the Gold is an amazing achievement. Several of Penzance’s businesses also entered this years competition and all did brilliantly, golds and silver gilts all round! The Princess May Recreation Ground received an Outstanding for their work, and the newly formed group Treneere Grows
received a Thriving. Flora Group’s Chief Gardener, Ken Prouse received a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his 53 year connection with Southwest in Bloom, an amazing achievement! Penzance Community Flora Group would like to thank Penzance Council for their help and funding and the Penlee Garden team for their assistance with watering. They are also extremely grateful to Cormac who clear all of their waste and assist them with bigger jobs and Penzance BID who pay to have all the baskets put up and taken down each year. The group do their own fundraising too with a big Christmas meal with raffle and auction, as well as quiz nights, marathons and sponsored walks to name a few. They always welcome volunteers to help as and when they can, no experience required! Just come along when you can, no permanent commitment. Congratulations Penzance Community Flora Group and Thank you for everything you do!
